Last week our latest container of hand-picked antiques and oddities from Europe arrived from Grand Tour Number Four. We’ve unpacked everything, finished our inventory and research, and set all of these items out on the floor in The Curio’s store. Come take a look! We’re open Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 12 to 4 pm.
Our “Grand Tours” in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands follow the tradition of European tours from the 1800s, when people traveled around Europe to educate themselves about the wide world of arts, culture, and innovation. We bring the things we find back to share what we learned and to add to your own collection. Our business is making history and the past exciting and accessible.
And we have had a “relooking” as they might say in Paris. We now realize that many of the items we brought back for you have to do with ways of “seeing” the world.
This anatomical model of an eye, for instance. By Merkelbach & Co. from around the 1880s, this educational model is not like ones you’ll see in the optician’s office or the classroom today. The detail and the material it’s made from (a papier-mache composite) show artful detail as well as scientific knowledge. For quite a bit more information on this eye model, click HERE. [Please note that this item has SOLD.]
Here are some images of other things now available to purchase in the store:
Gaumont Stereodrome, Paris, c. 1920s
Optica Paris Microscope, c. 1950s
... And many other beautiful pieces brought to Norfolk from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris for you to see... Pieces to view and with which to see with a new perspective.
