Initially, Prince Bernhard was initially seen as a sympathizer in neighboring Germany's new regime. In fact, he was a member of the SS, briefly before meeting his royal bride at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. When the Netherlands was invaded by the Nazis, he fled, volunteered his expertise unsuccessfully with British Intelligence, and ultimately flew many successful sorties against Nazi Germany in defense of his new homeland.
