Art Deco black and gold scarab beetle brooch. Gold painted on early celluloid or Bakelite in black. C-clasp. From the Netherlands, 1920s to 1930s.
Often maligned as a symbol of death, the scarab (otherwise known as the dung beetle - Scarab is so much less dramatic a name!) was used as a symbol of achievement on seals and amulets in Ancient Egypt.
The brooch is in good condition. Some wear to the gold paint, which can be expected from age and use. The wear seems to add character to this highly symbolic insect.
Measures 2 1/8 x 1 3/8 x 1/4 and weighs 1/4 oz.
