Large Victorian black chain choker necklace with gold and black velvet clasp from approximately the 1890s. Unusually large chain links (5/8 inch wide) of vulcanite. With early safety catch clasp.
An excellent statement piece. Most likely a piece of mourning jewelry from the late 19th century, when black was nearly the only acceptable color to wear while in mourning.
It measures 10 inches long and weighs 1 oz.
