A well-preserved daguerreotype in an embossed leather case. Not signed. Sealed with paper. Older gentleman sits in a pensive pose. The gentleman appears to be William Campbell Preston, a US Senator from South Carolina who is (unfortunately) said to be one of the founders of "proslavery politics."
Exterior of Union case is embossed on both sides with an eagle and a shield with stars and stripes surrounded by military flags. Gold embossed edges. Green embossed velvet lining. Gold washed brass oval mat.
Possibly American, c.1850s.
Image is incredibly sharp. The spine has been carefully conserved.
Measures 3 5/8 x 3 1/4 x 5/8, weighs 4 1/4 oz.
