George Henry Holden's Canaries and Cage Birds book with presentation box. Published in Boston by the author in 1883. First edition. Green cloth hardcover embossed in brown and gold. Presentation box is covered in green cloth and marbled paper with a photographic print plate of two birds on the a branch inserted on the side. Interior of the box is lined with green leather textured paper.
Book includes 74 color and black and white plates showing the various domestic bird varieties. In addition, there are several pages of illustrations of bird cages and bird feeders in the back followed by ads for purchasing bird paraphernalia. A testimony to the popularity of domesticated birds in the 19th century.
In good condition. Binding is very tight and shows careful repair beneath the spine in a green cloth similar to the original on the covers and spine. Presentation box is in very good condition. It actually looks almost like new. Some wear and fading on the spine. A bit of wear on the covers, especially on the four outer corners. Many colored plates are covered by original tissue guard, but not all. Pages are in very good condition except for page 113, which has a vertical fold that is cracking down the center of the page vertically.
This book with box measures 10 3/4 H x 7 3/8 W x 1 1/2 D inches, and weighs 3 pounds 2 ounces.
