Thick, blue Delft tile with what looks like a postage stamp diamond with a pot of tulips in the center. Tulips in each corner. From the Netherlands in the early to mid 17th century, perhaps the 1640s.
This is most likely one of the oldest Delft tiles in our collection. The tulips in a "stamp" design were very common, as it was a symbol of national pride in Holland - it was the height of Tulipmania.
The tile is more than 1/2 inch thick. Did you know that the thicker the Delft tile, the older it is, generally? Technology for thinner and thinner material developed later into the modern era.
One large chip in the bottom lefthand corner. Another chip on the bottom righthand corner. Two small chips on the top, and a few chips in the glaze on the surface. Measures 5 3/8 x 5 3/8 x 9/16 inches. Weighs 1 lb 1 oz.
