Stereoscope Card - The Merrimac as it lies at the entrance to Santiago Harbour, Cuba 1898


Stereoscope card depicting the mast and funnel of the sunken USS Merrimac. On the night of the 2nd and 3rd of June 1898, eight men made a sacrifice. The eight volunteer crew members who led the USS Merrimac to its end as a blockship to conquer and secure Santiago Harbor and thus take Cuba were Lieutenant Richmond P. Hobson, Coxswain Claus K. R. Clausen, Coxswain Osborn W. Deignan, Coxswain John E. Murphy, Chief Master-At-Arms Daniel Montague, Gunner's Mate First Class George Charette, Machinist First Class George F. Phillips, and Watertender Francis Kelly. They lie here, too.
