White celluloid frame brooch with vintage photograph, c.1880.

Featuring a jovial young woman dressed in the utilitarian dress of her day, this frame brooch is made from celluloid, which was patented in New Jersey in 1870. Originally conceived as a replacement for ivory, the uses range from early film, slide rules, and table tennis balls - and some jewelry. It measures 1.5in x 1 7/8 inches and weighs 1/4oz. The Netherlands, c. 1880.
